Who were the muckrakers ?



The Muckrakers were reporters , authors , and Critics who sought to expose the evils and injustices of Gilded Age Society , hoping to expose such social ills before they strangled democracy .




Theodore Roosevelt derisively named them for “ The man with the Muckrake “ a man who would rake himself the filth of the floor .  In simpler form of A muckraker means dirt collector .

What role did the muckrakers play in the progressive movement ?


The Muckrakers exposed and revealed  corruption in business and public life scandals  in government , and business , they often wrote about impoverished (poor or bankrupt ) people .

Uptown Sinclair is most known for his novel , The Jungle , and his investigation into the meat packing industry . Some refer to him as the “king of Muckrakers “ . This was because he went undercover for 7 weeks in Chicago meat packing industry and ultimately changed society’s perspective on the dangers and health risks of the food industry ."King Coal"  is a 1917 novel by Uptown Sinclair  that describes the poor working conditions in the coal mining  industry . 






Ida B . Well’s ultimate goal was to fight for her race and expose the events of lynching . she wrote about the motives of the white mob  and advice on how her race could protect themselves . Her newspaper , Free Speech and Headlight , was eventually shut down . She eventually joined the NAACP and became a leader among her race .




Lincoln Steffens was one of the original muckrakers who wanted to go beyond simple news reporting because he wanted to investigate why systems were corrupt . He was known to explore all areas of society , he exposed corporate monopolies and political corruption , working under Sam McClure’s magazine among other muckrakers . He is most famous for his investigation on the political and municipal corruption in Minneapolis , He also pursued an investigation of Wall Street . Steffens really made the American public question the integrity and form a cynicism around the municipal government
